Privacy Policy

Who this covers
The Survey School provides online surveying and mapping education, a members’ community, and related events. This policy explains what personal information we collect through our websites and services, how we use it, and the choices you have.
Our community platform, payment processing, email delivery, and video hosting are run by third-party providers. Where you deal with those services directly, their own privacy policies also apply.
Information we collect
- Information you give us — your name, email address, and the answers you provide in our forms (for example, what equipment you fly and what you want to achieve).
- Membership and transaction information — your membership status and tier, and records of purchases or event registrations. Full payment card numbers are handled by our payment processor and are not stored on our systems.
- Usage information — how you interact with our site and learning material, including pages viewed and lessons or quizzes completed.
- Device and technical information — IP address, browser and device type, and similar data collected automatically, including through cookies and comparable technologies.
- Communications — messages you send us, and whether marketing emails we send were delivered, opened, or clicked.
How we use it
- To provide the service — give you access to courses, community, events, and member benefits, and track your own progress.
- To communicate with you — account and transactional messages, replies to enquiries, and (where permitted) educational and promotional email you can unsubscribe from at any time.
- To improve what we offer — understand which material helps members most and where people get stuck.
- To market our services — including measuring how our advertising performs and reaching people likely to be interested.
- To keep the service secure — detect and prevent fraud, abuse, and unauthorised access.
- To meet legal obligations — including tax, accounting, and responding to lawful requests.
Where the law requires it, we rely on your consent for marketing messages and non-essential cookies. Otherwise we process information to perform our agreement with you, or for our legitimate interests in running and improving the service.
Advertising and analytics
We use cookies and similar technologies, including advertising and analytics tools from third parties such as social media and search platforms, to measure how our marketing performs and to reach people who may be interested. These tools may set their own cookies and receive information about your visit. You can control cookies in your browser, and most advertising platforms offer their own opt-out and ad-preference settings.
When we share information
We do not sell your personal information. We share it only:
- With service providers who operate parts of the service for us — hosting, community platform, payment processing, email delivery, video hosting, and analytics — under contracts limiting their use of it.
- With advertising and analytics partners, as described above.
- Where you ask us to, or where you post publicly in our community.
- To comply with law, enforce our terms, or protect the rights and safety of our members, our staff, or the public.
- In connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, with this policy continuing to apply.
How long we keep it
We keep personal information for as long as we need it to provide the service and for a reasonable period afterwards, and longer where we must for legal, tax, accounting, or dispute-resolution reasons. When it is no longer needed we delete it or sever its connection to you.
Security
We use appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect personal information, including encrypted connections and access limited to staff who need it. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Your choices and rights
- Marketing email — every marketing message carries an unsubscribe link, and one click stops all marketing email from us. Messages necessary to your account still apply.
- Access, correction, and deletion — you may ask for a copy of the information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it.
- Objection, restriction, and portability — depending on where you live, you may object to or restrict certain processing, and ask for your information in a portable format.
- Cookies — you can block or delete cookies in your browser, though parts of the service may not work properly without them.
To make a request, email hello@thesurveyschool.com from the address on your account. We may need to verify your identity first, and we will respond within the time the law allows. If you are in the UK, the EEA, or a US state with a comprehensive privacy law, you may also complain to your local data protection authority or attorney general.
International transfers
We operate from the United States, and our providers may process information there and elsewhere. Where information moves out of your country, we rely on the safeguards recognised under applicable law.
Children
Our services are intended for adults and are not directed to children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect their information. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes
We may update this policy from time to time. We will change the date above, and where the changes are significant we will give a more prominent notice.
